Sophomore College Prep English

The writing focus in this course is the introduction to and completion of the informational or argumentative research paper using proper research procedures. Students continue to develop reading and vocabulary skills with and emphasis on Latin and Greek roots for PSAT preparation. Preparation for the PSSA continues. The literature focus is on major American authors in the various genres. A summer reading assignment is required.


Public Speaking

This course is designed for the student who has a desire to further develop speaking techniques. The principles of public speaking will be explored in depth through such varied activities as learning the mechanics of speech, debate, parliamentary procedure, group discussion, oral interpretation, the impact of technology on communication, and participation in speech contests. This course is not to be substituted for regular English requirements and is available to Juniors and Seniors only.


9th Grade Speech


This semester course is designed to introduce students not only to public speaking occasions, but also to occasions that require both interpersonal and intra-personal communication and understanding. Students will be expected to be courteous members of the audience, interactive members of classroom discussion, and responsible and polite communicators. The communication process, social etiquette, audience identification, speech preparation, research skills, organization skills, use of effective language, the speech process, verbal and nonverbal communication delivery techniques, critical listening skills, and developing confidence will be emphasized. Appropriate use of language, individual and group responsibility, and varied interpersonal communication life experiences will be addressed. Students will experience varied interpersonal communication experiences as well as deliver specific speech types. Students will understand the duties of a responsible, ethical communicator and speaker. Required for all freshmen.
