Course Objectives

All Sophomore Writing/Literature Classes:       

  • Improving reading comprehension
  • Exploring and extrapolating ideas, themes, and concepts from works of literature-- using literature as a “springboard” for higher order thinking skills.
  • Questioning, considering several options, supporting opinions with evidence, i.e. illustrations & details
  • Using literary terminology when discussing & writing about literature
  • Writing effective introductions and conclusions
  • Developing paragraphs
  • Improving unity using transitions
  • Achieving sentence variety & effective word choices
  • Improving grammar & usage
  • Exploring imagination through creative writing
  • Improving listening skills
  • Developing research & documentation skills
  • Improving oral presentations skills
  • Expanding vocabulary
9th Grade Speech
  • Coping with (if not overcoming) your fear of speech
  • Improving interpersonal skills / intelligence
  • Improving oral presentations skills
  • Improving timing
  • Developing an appropriate voice
My Expectations of You
  • Try with 100% effort.  
  • Have an open mind.
  • Take time to think.
  • Respect and obey the established rules.
  • Don’t give up.
Standards
  • Show up and participate positively in class everyday.
  • Hand in all homework on time.
  • Read all texts carefully (reread if necessary) and take organized notes.  I assure you that much of what we read will be the hardest material you’ve ever seen.
  • Be on time.
  • Study hard for tests.  Begin preparation more than 24 hours in advance if necessary.
  • Show no outward sign of a negative attitude (including whining).
Grades
  • Don’t pressure me for a good grade.  Pressure yourself.
