"We come to terms as well as we can with our life long exposure to the world, and we use whatever devices we may need to survive. But eventually, of course, our knowledge depends upon the living relationship between what we see going on and ourselves. If exposure is essential, still more so is reflection. Insight doesn't happen at the click of the moment, like a lucky snapshot, but comes in its own time and from nowhere but within. The sharpest recognition is surely that which is charged with sympathy as well as shock; it is a form of human vision. And that of course is a gift. We struggle through any pain or darkness in nothing but the hope that we may receive it, and through any term of work in the prayer to keep it.

I knew this, anyway, that my own wish, indeed my continuing passion, would be not to point the finger in judgment, but to part a curtain, that invisible shadow that falls between people, the veil of indifference to each other's presence, each other's wonder, each other's human plight.

    More Than A Snapshot:

Using a Photograph To Sell An Idea

     benetton

In the eighties and nineties, United Colors of Benetton became known for its advertisements, which did not display their clothing line in any way.  Instead, the company chose to use their ads as a blackboard for social and political commentary.

    Your Challenge:

Using only photography and a minimal amount of text (little or none), create your socio-political photographic statement.

    lyrics

Lyrics as Art: A Visual Representation of the Written Word

Choose a song, set of lyrics, or lyric from one of the following songwriters/musicians: Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Bernie Taupin, Bob Marley, Carole King, Leonard Cohen, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Van Morrison, Joseph Arthur, and Nick Drake.  Investigate the context of said song or lyric, journal about it, create a plan, and shoot your interpretation of these words.  Go beyond the obvious or mundane and really get inside the writer’s head.

Above you can see the hand-written lyrics to Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”  I started by listening to the song and really focusing on the words.  Then I found these hand-written lyrics.  Then I wrote down how I interpreted the words and how they spoke to my life.  (All of this was done in a creative journal format.)

Next, I would break down the parts that affected me the most and then write out a plan, with diagrams, as to what I would like to shoot.  I would think about wardrobe, models, content, environment, etc.  The shooting and processing should be the easy part.

The planning is what really matters.

Please have film ready to process on the first day of school, as well as evidence of your process and plan.

I'll Judge This Book By Your Cover

    A Photography II Assignment

First, bring in one example of an intriguing book cover and be ready to defend your choice.  (For Monday, 9/27).  You will also need to create a brainstormed list of potential literary sources that interest you.

After we have discussed the components of a strong book cover, you will:

Utilize photography, text, and Photoshop elements to prepare a cover for a book of your choice.

What do you need to know?  Is it important to know the theme(s)?  Characters?  Crucial moments?  Interesting elements?  Um.....yes.

You will need to hand in a printed copy of your work, a digital copy in jpeg format, and a typed explanation of your work.  You will be critiquing your peers, and they will be critiquing you, so make sure your writing is well thought-out and honors both the themes of your book and your artistic intentions.

    proof1

    PROOF.

    proof

    noun

1.evidence sufficient to establish a thing as true, or to produce belief in its truth.

2.anything serving as such evidence: What proof do you have?

3.the act of testing or making trial of anything; test; trial: to put a thing to the proof.

A photograph is evidence.  Evidence that something happened, that the moment occurred, that the story is real.

    Truth, memory, verification, confirmation, documentation.

Use photography to show proof of something; something that stirs your soul.  Make it real and evident and important to everyone that sees your photographs.  Shoot it, write about it, make it matter to those of us who were not there.

This particular photograph is of a singular moment of a group of best friends walking together on a simple Sunday morning in one of their favorite places on this earth- a place that brought them all together.  This is one "answer."  It is far from the only answer.  It could be graffiti on a long-abandoned building, or the weathered hand of a 90 year old great-grandmother, or a vine-covered tombstone of a lost loved one.

    It could be anything.

Show us your evidence.  Show us your proof of what you feel.

    Make it matter.
