5 Levels of ELD
Level 1 - Entering - these students do not speak or understand very much English. They may have a "silent period", in which students do not speak and are learning the language by listening and observing.
Level 2 - Emerging - At this level, students are still beginners. The students may speak in short choppy sentences. They may be able to read short sentences and write in simple complete sentences.
Level 3 - Developing. Students are becoming more proficient in English. They are speaking in longer sentences. They can also read and write longer sentences. They still may have many errors in their speech and grammar.
Level 4 - Expanding. Students are closer to grade level competencies in English. Students are now speaking using compound and complex sentence structures with more detail. They use some "technical" or "academic" language in their conversations. Their reading is closer to grade level. Their writing is more complex and detailed. Again, students at this level are using more "technical" and "academic" language in their writing.
Level 5 - Reaching. Students perform close to or on grade level with their native English-speaking peers. Students are able to speak and write using academic and technical language.
