Course Outline – Guitar Class Level IIThis is a course for students who have studied previously and wish to continue their study of guitar. You will learn simple folk-song type material using varied melodic style as well as modern chording styles. Activities are geared to learning staff notation, chord patterns, and rhythm. Practicing is done during class sessions on instruments provided by the school. You can expect to become a moderately good player.
You will learn open chords, movable chords, accompaniment techniques, and a variety of playing techniques and styles including both the pick-style and finger-style approaches to the guitar. Music fundamentals, theory, songs, performances, listening, composing, improvising, analyzing, and reading standard notation and tablature will be included in this course.
Goals
- To learn how to play chords, accompaniment and melody on the guitar
- To learn how to read music notation, chord diagrams and tablature
- To develop an understanding of music fundamentals and theory
- To learn how to perform, write and create music
- To develop the ability to analyze, describe and listen to music
- To develop an understanding of music as it relates to history and culture

Evaluation
Grades in this class will be determined on the following basis:
Class Participation:
1. Students are expected to be on time for class, attentively participating to the fullest extent.
2. Students are expected to treat each other with patience and respect and demonstrate proper care of the instrument that is provided by the school.
3. A Participation Grade will be earned by each student of 3 points per day that the student is prepared and participates in all activities. Being late or unprepared results in a loss of 1 point per infraction.
4. Extra credit may be earned for peer-tutoring or as announced by the teacher.
Tests and Quizzes:
A minimum of two formal playing tests will be administered each marking period. These will be practiced assignment that are prepared and performed either in groups for the class. However, informal assessments based on short examples and graded at 1 point per measure will occur on almost a daily basis. Written tests and quizzes are given occasionally to evaluate your understanding of musical and historical concepts separate of your playing ability.
Basic Rules
1. Treat yourself, your teacher, classmates and your instrument with respect.
2. No food, drink or gum-chewing in class.
3. Participate in daily class assignments and activities.
4. Permission to use the restroom/lavatory should be obtained and completed within the first five minutes of class and requires you to use the sign out log for the classroom.
5. The use of cell phones and other electronic devises players restricted during class. Penalties include misconduct form and loss of participation points.
6. Picks are not to be used in class unless specifically directed to do so by the teacher.
7. Be prepared with the following: pencil, folder, handouts or workbooks and a positive attitude!
