Manipulating A Famous Work Of Art:

    A Social/Political Commentary

Using your new found knowledge of Photoshop, manipulate a famous work of art.  Place this work into a contemporary (current) context.  For example, above you will see Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Memory" on the left.  On the right, The Simpsons have been substituted in place of certain objects.  The result is fun, but still honors the original composition.  (I do not know the original intent of the artist, but I did find this to be a very interesting example of the visual imagery for which I am looking.)

Another, bolder example: As I was checking out how Mrs. McPoyle's class was handling this assignment, I saw a student working with the Grant Woods painting, "American Gothic."  This is the famous painting of the man with the pitchfork, standing aside a woman, presumably his wife.  Both look quite solemn.

    gothic

The student has "transformed" the woman to Rihanna and the man to Chris Brown.  She will now manipulate the background and add other details to make some kind of statement.  Interesting idea, and certainly contemporary.

Brainstorm ideas and create a digital art work that begins with a famous work of art, utilizes at least five layers, and makes a social/political statement.  Consider using various filters, found imagery, and text.  This piece will be due June1st for seniors and June 3rd for underclassmen.

    Creating An Advertisement

Discuss what makes an advertisement "work."  Some questions to fuel this discussion: What captures our attention?  Who is the target audience?  Is the imagery related to the product?  Why was such imagery chosen?  Is there a logo involved?  Is there a slogan?  Is the font interesting?  Is the advertisement "attention-grabbing?"  Would you buy this product?

Now, utilize photography and Adobe Photoshop to create your own advertisement.  You should have a product/service/company, a catch phrase/slogan/text, a target audience, and should create a visually-appealing design.  Your advertisement will be evaluated by both your peers and the instructor on the basis of: slogan (text), craftsmanship, and overall design (creative use of imagery and words, visual appeal, etc.)  You should be able to answer the question: What am I selling?  (Is it a product?  A company?  A service?  An idea?)

Photography I Sabrina Ward Harrison Assignment: The Studio Component

After researching Sabrina Ward Harrison and similar artists and preparing your 2-3 page paper, you will be creating a work in the studio that utilizes photography, acrylic paint, charcoal, oil pastels, hard pastels, collage elements, conte, etc., to tell the story of you.  This autobiographical work should be done in a "creative journal" style, but should not be done in actual creative journal.  Instead, it should be a free-standing work of art on paper or canvas.

Try to focus on who you truly are; perhaps concentrate on just one aspect of you: a struggle, a success, a mystery, an anxiety....you choose.

You should plan this studio piece in your creative journal and show this to me by Thursday, April 7th.  Your finished piece is due by April 21st at the latest.

Good luck.....show us something about you!

    Photo I In-Class Assignment

    Mixed Media and Photography

Point your web browser to http://www.sabrinawardharrison.com/ee/.  Investigate this artist, both on this webpage and through a variety of other sources.  Prepare a 2-3 page paper on her work, current project, ideas, and compare and contrast her to similar artists.  Include a critical analysis of her work.  Do not merely copy and paste information (Yes, I will check if you have done this) and offer your own thoughts and opinions, utilizing art terms.

    Some questions to ponder:

How does Ward Harrison's 100 Bits of the World relate to our Day In The Life project?

What is the True Living Project?

What other artists work with this type of media?

How can one combine text, photography, and studio elements to create a cohesive piece of art?

Why is her work and similar artists' work important?  Or is it not important?

How can/does your work relate to this artist's (your creative journal entries in particular)?
