     The focus of this course is on basic reading skills such as word recognition, word attack and decoding skills, and vocabulary and comprehension improvement. There is an added look at reading skills needed to read outside of school. The course is based on the Reading Apprenticeship framework and is taught using teacher created materials, textbooks, and novels.
    Students are scheduled for this course based on teacher recommendations, prior reading courses, previous reading test scores and standard achievement test results.
    This class is designed to develop and refine reading skills. Reading is seeing and understanding words in print. The reading classes at East High focus on the following ideas:

           mechanics of reading

           increase vocabulary skills

           decoding skills

           comprehension strategies

                        novel study

                        using the dictionary and other reference materials

                            skills for reading after graduation
