On average, schoolchildren get six to ten viral illnesses a year.  A few tips can reduce your child’s incidence of illness.

    1. Wash hands – One study showed that regular hand washing cut absenteeism by 20%!
    2. Hands off! – Remind your child to keep their hands off their faces as much as possible.   
    3. Get fresh air – Cool weather does not cause colds.  Studies suggest most colds during the winter months are a result of spending more time indoors.
    4. Raise the humidity – Most cold viruses thrive in dry air, so consider using a humidifier at night.  It also keeps mucous membranes moist and less prone to infection.
    5. Get plenty of sleep - Sleep deprivation has been found to increase susceptibility to colds.
    6. Just say no – If your child’s friend has a cold, postpone their play date.
    7. Remember your 4 food groups – Good nutrition plays an important role in keeping your immunity strong.
