My name is Laura Bender and I am a learning support teacher as well as the autism specialist for East High.  I am a teacher with many hats this year. I co-teach or oversee many different areas of the school on any given day. I teach small group instruction for history and science.  I also teach a Social Skills class for my students who are on the Autism Spectrum. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look forward to working with you and your child to make this a smooth and easy transition into life beyond high school.

    Academics

I currently teach/co-teach two subjects, 2 classes of Standards Based Math II (Algebra/Geometry) with Mrs. Miller and 1 class of Standards Based Math I (Pre-Algebra) with Mrs. Townsend.

I teach two classes of Social Skills/Acceleration.  The social skills class, co-taught with Christina Errickson, has been created to focus on the affective skills that each student needs to maintain not only through school, but through life as well.  Refer to the attached documents to find out more about this exciting class.  Please review with your child at home the skills taught throughout the year. The social skills class this year is set up in conjunction with an acceleration class. We will be meeting 1:1 with particular students to focus on their personal issues at the time. When students are not meeting with the team, they will be focusing on make up work or previewing upcoming units in their other courses. This class is worth 1 credit as well.

I also teach on period of Science.  We will be covering content in the General Science area.  The content follows the guidelines set forth by the Science department here at East.  However, I modify the curriculum to fit the needs of the students.

I also teach on period of History.  We will be covering content in the American Government area.  The content follows the guidelines set forth by the History department here at East.  However, I modify the curriculum to fit the needs of the students.

**Please note that each student has a folder to keep all paperwork for each academic subject I teach. They are located in the room. I do not allow the students to take them out unless given permission. This is done to keep organization. **
